The Hideaway Studio courtesy of Imogen Heap and her crack team is the ideal space to embark on such a venture. Its grand and cosy, its spacious and intimate, its old and charming but technically top notch. It marries a place to make a home and a place to make art in unique and idiosyncratic ways

I’d recommend this secret spot without reservation to any musician friends wanting to hole and away to write or record, or both…This is a totally unique a magical wonderland for music-making with incredibly magical vibes all around. The property and house drip with character and inspiration and the staff and people kicking around are the perfect combination of hands-off and helpful. I found this place deeply inspiring for music-making...so many musical toys to play with! So many horses to pat! So many fields to walk in to clear one’s songwriting head!

The Round House offers a wonderful creative environment for recording. I’d recommend it, especially for songwriters and composers seeking fresh inspiration.

Imagine a secret room in a magical tower ,brimming with sounds that hover , trill ,swell and resonate as you literally walk slowly to the mixing desk. I’m proud to be part of the album “I Can Spin a Rainbow” which I recorded with Amanda Palmer in this mysterious space called Hideaway Studio over the course of three weeks in 2016. Even so, the serious recording was necessarily delayed one day as this secret room is littered with exotic instruments gathered together by Imogen Heap .Quite simply, we needed to capture them. We began with the Marxophone which had us imagining The White lady into gliding through the wall .Then we moved onto the concertina, then the water phone , the mbira , on and on until the day was done and the birds outside joined in. In fact Imogen HAS harnessed these special sounds into a must-have sound library from Soniccouture called “Box Of Tricks”. On a more disciplined second day , the serious song worrying and recording began , and we simply succumbed to the rarefied atmosphere. I’ve recorded in many exotic spaces during my lifetime…nothing touched Hideaway Studio for sheer magic.

In the summer of 2019 I spent three glorious weeks composing and recording the score of a film at the Hideaway. They got me up and running in an hour and I could go on about the gear, but what made it a really special - and productive - place to work was this sense of happy magic about the place. Maybe it’s because the building is a whimsical shape, maybe it’s the fabulous interior design, maybe it’s the people who look after the house and all the humans in it, maybe it’s the lingering influence of Imogen Heap. It was the perfect place to work and to be creative. I recorded in all the rooms, worked happily into the wee hours, drank tea while looking out at the view, went on long walks and talked to the horses. I was a world away when I needed to be but it was an easy train ride to London when I needed a break. Can’t wait to come back!
